From the smallest town in the world! A traditional farmer's dish to be shared with good friends.
2/3 bottle full-bodied red wine
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 - 2 thick slabs of country white bread
4 teaspoons sugar
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
In a small saucepan, heat wine over low flame until very hot, but not boiling. Pour into a medium pitcher.
Meanwhile, in a small skillet, heat olive oil and brown bread slices on both sides.
Add sugar to hot wine, but don't stir. Sprinkle pepper on top. Submerge bread in hot wine.
To serve: You can do it the traditional way by passing it around among a few friends: take a spoonful of bread and then a sip of wine, stirring as you go to increase sweetness. Or you can divide the wine between 4 small bowls, add 1 teaspoon sugar to each and a sprinkling of pepper, and add a hunk of fried bread to each bowl.
